장비안내 미지의 시료 속에 있는 결정상들의 정성 및 정량 분석을 위하여 사용되는 장비이다.
엑스선관(X-Ray Tube)으로부터 발생된 단색 엑스선을 시료에 조사하면 시료내의 결정상은 Bragg법칙에 따라 고유한 각도에서 회절된다.
이때 엑스선이 검출되는 가도와 세기는 해당 결정상을 특징짓는 고유한 것으로 이 측정 자료로 부터 미지의 결정상을 확인할 수 있다.
