Abstract
This study was carried out in attempt to examine the relationship between the type of tasks and the use of communication strategies in the written performances of Korean high school EFL students. To this end, participants were asked to make up stories based on the pictures without captions in English in two tasks (direct L2 description vs. indirect L2 description). The result showed that there was a significant difference between the use of achievement strategies and that of reduction strategies in the two tasks. It also showed that the preferred strategies were L2 based achievement ones such as circumlocution and approximation/generalization.
