Abstract
The golden apple snail (Pomacea canaliculata), originally from the Amazon, has adapted overwintering in Korea, gradually expanding its range. Its life cycle includes a 30 day larval and juvenile stage, and adult snails can live for 2 to 6 years depending on climate conditions. This species is a significant pest in rice fields, especially damaging young seedlings within the first three weeks after transplanting. However, it also contributes to weed control. Highly adaptable to environmental changes, including variations in salinity, it can thrive in coastal areas. Increasing interest surrounds its potential applications in food, medicine, and ecosystem management, shifting focus from pest control to broader uses. This paper reviews the classification, life cycle, and ecology of the golden apple snail as used in eco-friendly rice cultivation, including its overwintering, habitat preferences, impact on crops, and ecological effects. The findings provide foundational data for assessing its long-term impact on natural ecosystems.
