Abstract
In this study, we demonstrate physiological and biochemical differences in cucumber and fgleaf grourd root system influenced by low temperature. Since cucumber plants are mostly cultivated in plastic house during winter time, maintaining optimal root function became crucial under stressful condition, a reason why figleaf gourd is used as rootstock to enhance cucumber growth. In this review, we have attempted to summarize our work of over 20 years starting from photosynthesis, respiration and xylem sap transport. H+-A TPase activity of root plasma membrane of both species and its gene regulation were the next step in view of the importance of the activity maintaining cell pH and proton concentration gradient necessary to mediate water transport.
