Abstract
Focusing on Vertigo (Schwindel. Gef?hle) and Die Ringe Des Saturn (The Rings of Saturn), this essay attempts to vindicate a challenging aspect of creative achievement of W. G. Sebald’s prose. Being prose, Sebald’s exilic writing refuses to be fixed into any definitions; blurring and confusing facts and fictions, reworking and associating all kinds of generic boundaries, it, first of all, in the form of peripatetic pursuits, reveals analogically unutterable truths buried in the traumatic psyche of Jewish people in the age of The Third Reich. While it seems plausible that Sebald’s work as a narrative art places him as a Auschwitz writer, his testimonial as well as wandering/ wondering voice defies every conventional tagging; it is not that the Shoah is not Sebald’s pivotal concern but that his experimental work resists all kind of convenient categorization. Struggling with the modernistic false consciousness of sexism, colonialism, classism, and Eurocentricism which persists ubiquitously in modern Europe to say nothing of his native country, Germany, his texts achieve a breakthrough in untrodden territory of world literature; Hence the critical evaluation of Sebald’s “unbestimmt” narrative as an innovative evolution in the postmodern literary world.
