Antifungal Activity of Phytopathogens for Crude Extracts Obtained from Chitinase-Producing Bacterium, Paenibacillus lautus JS-1

Abstract
In this study, chitinase-producing bacterium, Paenibacillus lautus JS-1 grown in NA media exhibited a variety of carbohydrates as substrates in the API test. The crude enzyme extracted from chitin culture broth have the minimum inhibition rate of 56.7% against Colletotrichum acutatum at 14 days after incubation. The crude enzyme extracted from the TSB culture broth exhibited a maximum inhibition rate of 72.6% against Valsa ceratosperma in dual culture. In twelve well plates of chitin culture broths, the highest inhibition value was found to be 85.4% against V. ceratosperma, 81.9% against C. truncatum, and 70.0% against C. acutatum. The deformation of fungal hyphae in dual culture media was demonstrated using an optical microscope. The crude enzyme extracted from all three culture broths revealed the fungi's enlarged cell wall. JS-1 produced plant growth promoting substances such as acetic acid or siderophore. These results suggest that P. lautus JS-1 could be used as an effective biocontrol agent for phytopathogen control.
