Abstract
This article analyzes research trends in second/English language research published in Studies in English Education from 1996 to 2016. A total of 428 articles were surveyed and analyzed by two researchers cooperatively, focusing on participants, research methods, target language skills, and research themes along with the language in which each article was written. The results are as follows. Articles in English have increased gradually and students in higher educational settings have participated most over the period. Articles tend to rely heavily on quantitative research and relatively scarce research utilizing qualitative or theoretical method has been published. As for target language skills, reading and writing have been studied most followed by speaking. In terms of research themes, studies based on pedagogy have been published most. Discussions are made to extend the implications of the results to researchers and educators in second language education fields.
