The Effects of Gloss Types on Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary Acquisition in L2 learning
Jee Hyun Ma & Young Ah Cho (Chonnam National University?Dongshin University)
The current study investigated the effects of different gloss conditions on L2 learners’ reading comprehension and vocabulary retention both quantitatively and qualitatively. One hundred twenty university students with a low English proficiency level were randomly assigned to the definition gloss group, exemplification gloss group, and synonym gloss group with 40 students for each condition. For the current study, a background questionnaire, vocabulary size test, pre- and post-reading comprehension tests, and vocabulary posttests were administered. The findings of the study reported that the different gloss types had significantly different effects on learners’ reading ability and lexical retention, displaying that synonym gloss group learners yielded better reading test scores and receptive and productive word knowledge gains. Pedagogical implications and suggestions were made based on the results.
