Abstract
The Black Stork (Ciconia nigra) is considered the most primitive species in the genus Ciconia, notable for its monotypic behavior and morphology. This species is distributed across the Palearctic and Indo-African regions, covering a large breeding range (40°-60°N), but its population size is relatively small. Therefore, few previous studies have investigated the features of genetic variation. Here, we have collected and analyzed available data to examine genetic variations across their Palearctic distribution. Our preliminary results suggest that genetic variations are minimal among migratory populations, while some isolated populations in the Iberian Peninsula exhibited slight differences. Future studies should investigate detailed among-population genetic variations with more samples, in relation to the migration habits of Black Storks, to validate and expand upon our preliminary findings.
