Abstract
The purpose of this study is to estimate the economic benefit of the marine science technology. To do so, this study adopted the unmanned submersible(Hemire) as the case of analysis, using a contingent valuation method(CVM) with double-bounded dichotomous choice. A hypothetical scenario was given to 400 respondents to determine their levels of Willingness to Pay(WTP) for the unmanned submersible. The result from the estimation of the WTP of the unmanned submersible was calculated as approximately 2,094 Korea Won. This shows that the economic value is estimated 161.8 billion Korea Won. Therefore, considering the result of this study, the unmanned submersible is of great benefits to public. Based on the result of this study, policy recommendations are as follows. Korean government budget expenditure should be actively carried out to the research and development(R&D) of the marine science. The R&D of the marine science including the unmanned submersible is located long distances away from the real life of public in terms of time and space. So, political concerns about R&D of marine science is deemed to be low. But confirming the result of this study, public showed high expectation for this project and this justifies the government budget expenditure for this project.
