Abstract
We has been preparing for large-scale disinfection treatment to preserve organic cultural heritages suchas woodblocks, books, and paintings from biological damage under disasters caused by earthquakes, floods, wars,and climate changes. In this study, we designed and reviewed the process to evaluate the large-scale applicabilityof gamma-ray disinfection treatment in a commercial facility that can accommodate a large volume on the basisof previous study. For the test, we prepared a standard test box (63.2(W) × 43.7(D) × 15.6(H) cm3) with rock woolsubmerged in tap water and with agar medium plates cultured with Cladosporium sp. (freshwater target), andEpicoccum nigrum (seawater target). 18 standard boxes were loaded of in a cabinet for gamma radiation disinfection.
The fungi were perfectly controlled within 20 kGy (3 kGy h?1) in the test. In addition, the results of the dosedeviation according to the loading positions of 18 boxes in the cabinet showed that the attenuation was greater inthe middle than at the side edges. Six cabinets were irradiated simultaneously for the test. It was confirmed that thedose deviation between the cabinets placed non-sequentially was minimal, within 1-2 kGy, suggesting the stableapplication for large-scale gamma-ray disinfection processes.
