Dangerous forms of historical revisionism are a growing concern in today’s global society. In no location is this more relevant than in East Asia, where contortions of historical events by governments reignite old animosities and stymie the advancement of peace and stability in the region. This paper investigates the increasing problems of historical revisionism in East Asia referred to here as historical distortionism, its relationship to identity formation, culture, and nationalism, and how, if left unchecked, it can lead to increased animosity and potentially violent conflicts.n order to do this, the paper explores the case of China’s claim to the Korean Koguryo Kingdom, also known as “China’s Northeast Project.” The results of this paper can be used to resolve differences in history and create conditions for open dialogues on the issue.
