Abstract
This paper explores Svetlana Alexievich's unique position as a feminist writer and political activist, examining her portrayal of traditionally feminine women in light of her political activism. Through her five oral histories, Alexievich presents the virtue and beauty of various types of women, such as maternal figures and self-sacrificing housewives. Furthermore, she highlights the importance of women retaining feminine qualities. This paper argues that Alexievich's focus on traditional femininity is a political response to Soviet ideology, which sought to suppress gendered identity in favor of a homogenized, collectivist one. In addition, it demonstrates that Alexievich's literary depictions of traditional womanhood are aligned with her political and feminist activism, offering a complex and politically charged perspective on femininity within the context of Soviet and post-Soviet history.
