Abstract
This paper explores methods for teaching Japanese adverbs by focusing on the stylistic differences of adverbs that are challenging for Japanese learners. Drawing on discussions of stylistic variations in modern and contemporary Japanese, it proposes a set of learning items(as a vocabulary list) for adverbs. First, it presents a list of adverbs that reflect the stylistic variations in modern Japanese from the Meiji and Taisho periods, when most contemporary adverbs are believed to have been established. Next, based on this, a provisional list of adverbs reflecting stylistic characteristics was created using the 'Balanced Corpus of Contemporary Written Japanese'(BCCWJ). Finally, referencing prior research on contemporary Japanese, a provisional list was proposed, categorized by stylistic types and learning levels (with indicators for JLPT levels and words for beginner learners), enabling its use according to learning contexts. Based on this result, future efforts should not only investigate the stylistic features of adverbs using the BCCWJ but also incorporate spoken language corpus to systematically and comprehensively create an adverb list that reflects stylistic variations in contemporary Japanese.
