This paper examines the usage of the Japanese evaluative adverbs in the texts of the Meiji and Taisho periods(1868-1926) from the viewpoint of stylistic features and differences. Using the "Corpus of Historical Japanese Meiji-Taish? Period Series” provided by the National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics, this paper analyzes examples by classifying them into text types(conversation or narration) and Stylistic features(Literary type or Colloquial type). Based on these selection criteria, 23　adverbs　were surveyed as evaluation adverbs(e.g. ainiku(to), oshikumo, saiwai(ni/nimo/nisite), hukoni(mo/site) ‘unfortunately’, hushigini(mo) ‘strangely’). As a result, evaluative adverbs used more often in the colloquial style as a whole, and there was a remarkable difference in the usage tendency by literary and colloquial style in each word. Based on present results, it is necessary to examine a wide range of evaluative adverbs and clarify the tendency of usage evaluative adverbs in modern and contemporary Japanese since the Showa era due to stylistic features.
