The nursery rhymes of Mother Goose (NRMG) have been used as vehicles and input resources for young learners of English because their rhythmic and prosodic structures characteristically illustrate the basic phonological patterns of English. However, few people are aware of the underlying implications of the lyrics. This study investigated the historical backgrounds of the lyrics, demonstrating that the songs of many well-known NRMG imply death, plague, torture, religious persecution, and political satire. Furthermore, their changing lyrics seem to be associated with historical events such as Eureka Rebellion, Industrial Revolution, French Revolution, and Spanish Inquisition. These suggest that NRMG are alive like molting animals; They molt old lyrics and get new ones in the reflection of the societal concerns of the era.
