A Corpus-based Study on English Stative Verbs Used in Progressive Aspect Dilyorakhon Nosirova & Munhong Choe Abstract: This study aims to investigate the use of English stative verbs in progressive aspect with a focus on their prevalence in different registers and its change over recent decades. It also explores the conversational contexts in which they are likely to occur. The study first estimates the usage frequency of progressive statives using three corpora (BNC, COCA, and the Time Magazine Corpus) and then examines dialogues in Modern Family to identify their implications and pragmatic functions. The results show that although the frequency of progressive statives has not significantly increased, they are used quite productively in a range of discourse fields, and that they occur more often in written than in spoken texts. The subsequent qualitative analysis reveals further information about their usage contexts and meaning variations.
