Abstract
This study aimed to examine the mediation effects of social interest on the relationship between internalized shame and interpersonal problems among Korean university students. Participants comprised of 463 Korean university students who completed questionnaires including inventories of internalized shame, interpersonal problems, and social interest.
Mediation effects were examined by analyzing data through SPSS 21.0 and the SPSS Process Macro program (model 4). The results were as follows: First, social interest showed a significant negative correlation with interpersonal problems. Second, social interest had a partial mediating effect on the relationship between internalized shame and interpersonal problems. Third, social interest exhibited a partial mediating effect on the relationship between internalized shame and the subtypes of interpersonal problems (moving against and moving away). Based on the results, implications for counseling strategies are suggested.
