Abstract
Mugwort-moxibustion is a therapeutic method, which is warm stimulation and delivers medicinal ingredients and is used by burning the moxibustion at an area around an acupuncture point. In this study, a chitosan/gelatin/genipin based-transdermal patch including melanin and mugwort extract was prepared for photothermal induced drug release and warm stimulation therapy. The thickness of the transdermal patch was 0.26±0.03 mm. The color of the transdermal patch was black color due to melanin and the cross-linking reaction by genipin. In scanning electron microscopy (SEM), it was observed that the transdermal patch was manufactured as uniform without aggregation or precipitation. In addition, due to the photothermal conversion characteristics of melanin, temperature of the patch increased according to a near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation time or intensity. When treated with NIR laser intensity of 0.5-0.7 W/cm 2 for 5 min, the temperature was controlled at 41-42 o C, which had a warm stimulation effect. In particular, the release behavior of mugwort extract from transdermal patch increased from 44% to 64% depending on the presence or absence of laser irradiation.
