This study examines the social determinants of health among Sri Lankan Tamil refugees in camps in Tamil Nadu, India. It looks into the multifaceted impacts of socio-political and economic contexts on refugees’ health, both physical and mental health, and healthcare access. The study explores the impact of poor living conditions, overcrowding in camps, poor sanitation, economic instability and limited employment opportunities, among other factors. By examining data available on the refugee camp locations, the study shows how remoteness and isolation from cities and urban healthcare facilities lead to challenges for refugees. Refugees living in these camps are further isolated by little to no access to transportation and infrastructure. Moreover, the study also addresses gender inequality issues, revealing how shared washroom facilities and safety problems at camps negatively affect women and girls. Although the support and aid provided by NGOs and community is important, it is limited due to problems of accessibility and funds. The findings of this study call for targeted policy reforms, inclusive care and enhanced social support within and outside the refugee camps.
