This paper focuses on the relationship between the adverbial case marker ‘-esyeo(에셔)’ and the predicate in the latter part of Middle Korean. The previous research on ‘-esyeo(에셔)’ have not discussed in a concrete manner the conditions on its semantic function. The basic meaning of ‘-esyeo’ as indicating a meaningful syntactic relationship between a noun phrase and a predicate cannot be denied. It therefore seems reasonable to distinguish between the thematic role of ‘-esyeo’ as indicating a logical semantic relationship between a noun phrase and a predicate, and its basic meaning. To address this issue, we studied the relationship between ‘-esyeo’ and the predicate through corpus analysis. Through the corpus analysis, we ascertained that the frequency of the several meanings of ‘-esyeo’ was quite distinct from the order of their arrangement in a dictionary. Furthermore, we discuss the abstract concept of ‘-esyeo’ from the perspective of the situation it indicates. Also, we discussed about the meaning''s expansion of ''-esyeo''.
