The purpose of this study is to develop an evaluation model for beaches as coastal ecotourism destinations and to apply the model to domestic beaches. The beach evaluation model was constructed with the three major categories of tourism-supply, tourism-demand, and coastal ecology with nine variables. As a result of applying the beach evaluation model to 73 beaches on the south coast of Korea, the explanatory power of the regression model on total tourist volume was about 60%. The results of comparing the types of beaches of the south coast of Korea with urban type, rural type, and Jeju type are as follows. In urban-type beaches, the scores of tourism-demand and tourism-supply are high but the score of coastal ecology is low. While Jeju-type beaches relatively have high scores on coastal ecology and tourism-supply, rural-type beaches show low scores on them. The results of this study can be used as a basis for establishing policies on the effective use and management of beaches as coastal ecotourism destinations.
