Abstract
Factors Influencing Learners’ L2 Course Selection and Learning Expectancy Ungyong Choi & Hyungsun Kim
Abstract: This study investigated i) students’ essential considerations for selecting an L2 course, ii) their expectancies in learning an L2, and iii) the relationship between i) and ii). 126 senior students participated in developing the questionnaire; 146 junior students answered it. Factor analyses and ANOVA were carried out by SPSS. The students tended to value practical, tangible course characteristics more than self-fulfilling, intangible ones. Yet, they preferred instructor approachability to grade leniency and selected instructor’s expertise over less study load. Overall, the students tended to take actions toward extrinsic rewards over intrinsic ones; they pursued easy and comfortable courses over learning value. Instructors may want to compromise between ideal and reality that can garner insights for the benefit of students. Future studies based on purely optional L2 courses were recommended.
