Purpose: This study aims to investigate how referees handle crisis situations when clear misjudgments occur as a result of advancements in video technology in sports competitions. Specifically, it explores the crisis management situation and the resolution behavior adopted by referees. Method: Our approach involved conducting a through review of previous studies pertaining to video reviews, game rules, and relevant newspaper articles. We conducted a comprehensive literature review that included studies and research books specifically focused on crisis management communication in sports. Results: The integration of video review systems in sports competitions, driven by advances in science and technology, had exposed human referees to potential crisis situations due to clear judgment errors. In response, referees tended to engage in “apologetic” behavior in response, which represents the highest level of communication response to manage these crisis situations. Conclusion: In the current transitional phase, where both human referees and video technology coexist in sports competitions, the act of referee offering an “apology” is considered necessary and vital. It serves as a means to address and navigate the challenges posed by incorrect judgments and emerging video technologies, helping to maintain the integrity and fairness of sports competitions.
