This scenario was developed to guide the nursing care for elderly patients in the terminal stage of septic shock due to postoperative infection after total hip arthroplasty. In older adults, postoperative infections can lead to severe complications, which can become life-threatening if they progress to septic shock. In this population, septic shock is associated with a low likelihood of recovery and may rapidly advance to the end-of-life stage. Effective symptom management, empathetic communication, and ethical decision-making are essential for providing high-quality end-of-life care. This scenario can help nursing students build practical competencies in caring for elderly patients with terminal-stage septic shock, including pre- and post-death nursing care, symptom management, compassionate communication with family members, and ethical decision-making.
