Abstract
In Bearheart, Gerald Vizenor criticizes ‘terminal creeds’ that are allegedly rooted in both of Native American nationalism and Euro-American colonial attitude. Bearheart’s narrative focuses on why some of ‘the circus pilgrims’ are killed so as to help the readers to identify terminal creeds embedded in their words and behavior. Each story of Bigfoot and Little Big Mouse’s death exemplifies how anyone who is possessed by any abstract creed may commit such a non-sensical or horrible crime, which concerns violence of terminal creeds in general. Vizenor also criticizes Euro-American imperialism or racism by presenting some Euro-American characters who reveal their unconscious hatred against the native people and colonialist desire to assimilate young native kids as exemplified in the story of Bearheart’s childhood. And the double-way cultural criticism in this novel is on the same track with cultural ‘transmotion’ and ‘survivance,’ which is necessitated to promote the betterment of the native people’s real life.
