Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the background of the Rwandan massacre and the colonial history, focusing on the novel ‘My Parents’ Bedroom’ of the writer Uwem Akpan from Nigeria. The Rwanda genocide, told by the narrator of the girl, can be seen as suggesting a kind of topographical map of how to look at African conflicts, especially internal ethnic conflicts and the aftermath of colonialism in the past. Encouraging the abandonment of trivial divisions is probably the core message that Akpan wants to convey through ‘My Parents’ Bedroom.’ The purpose of this thesis is to approach the historical reason why Africa has been defined as a continent of conflict by dealing with the process of The Rwanda genocide through Akpan’s novel. Based on these issues, this discussion specifies that Akpan presents a new interpretation of African history by embodying the unfortunate events of a family in the field of ethnic conflict in Rwanda and placing the ethnic hardships of Rwandans at the center of the narrative.
