Abstract
Major countries have tightened their emission standards of the Non-Road Mobile Machinery(NRMM) engines that contribute significantly to air pollution and are accountable for roughly 15 % of NOx and 5 % of PM.
Recently, the EU introduced a regulation that monitors the gaseous pollutant emission of in-service internal combustion engines installed on NRMM by using the Portable Emissions Measurement System(PEMS). Although a modern excavator has several operation modes(e.g., eco, standard, and power modes) for the convenience of the operators, the regulation has no terms about setting the mode during the monitoring test. In this paper, a 22-ton crawler excavator equipped urea-SCR was tested by applying the four operation modes using PEMS. The test result showed no significant difference in emission as setting the operation modes after being warmed with an exhaust gas temperature above 250 °C. However, while moving, the NOx emission of the power mode is different from the NOx of the other modes. In addition, the average engine load of the power mode was significantly higher than the others.
