Abstract
Odysseus in the Greek Tragedies and the Athenians Choi, Hae Young The Athenian tragedians in the 5th century BC often utilized the story of Odysseus in their work. Odysseus appeared in the works of Sophocles’ Ajax and Philoctetes, as well as in Euripides’ Cyclops, Hecuba and The Trojan Women. The portrayal of his character, however, varied not only according to who the author was but also between the different works of the same author. In this paper, I argue that the various features of Odysseus in the Greek Tragedies were closely connected with the Athenians and Athenian maritime activity. Also his images in the tragedies vary according to the author''s standpoint and to the political situation which reflects the conflict between different social classes, mainly between landowners (or phalanx soldiers) and maritime merchants or marine soldiers. The playwrights, especially Euripides, worried about the people being overwhelmed via the propagandic influences of the demagogues during the Peloponnesian War. By using the image of Odysseus, metaphorically connected with the Athenian peoples carrying on maritime activities or demagogues, the writer criticized them, or at least tried to persuade them from imperialistic maritime activities.
