Abstract
Considering the sedimentological setting and changes of fluvial environments in Yeongsan river
area, this study investigated the depositional and geochemical characteristics of the river. In addition, the
present study results were compared to the previous ones by Oh(2002). The channel deposits of the river
were composed mainly of gravels in the upper stream, sands in the midstream, and silts and clays in the
downstream. The deposits were strongly correlated with the mean grain size, Al content, and total organic
carbon (TOC) (r values > 0.7). Also, the geochemical elements in the deposits appeared to be controlled by
fining of sediments, surrounding geology, and organic matters like TOC. With regard to metallic Enrichment
Factor, Li (1.96), Zn (1.13), and Pb (2.19) were enriched in the deposits; however, P was enriched in some
limited areas only. According to the findings by Oh(2002), content changes were recognized in elements of
Al, Fe, Mg, Ca, Na, K, Ba, Cu, Ni, Sr, and Pb. Therefore, it is considered that grain size fining of the deposits controls the geochemical behaviors of the above-mentioned elements and that organic matters partly influence behaviors.
