Analysis of Intercultural Sensitivity of South-Eastern Asians’ Hangeul Learning by Visa Status and Stay Duration

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to analyze the intercultural sensitivity (IS) of South- Eastern Asians who staying in Korea according to the visa status and stay duration. The subjects were 102 South-Eastern Asians who learning Hangeul at the City Hall in G city, Korea. They responded to an IS questionnaire including demographic information and Hangeul learning motivation. The visa category was the spouses, the workers, and the students. The stay duration in Korea was categorized less than a 1-year, 2-5years and 6-10 years. The results were as follows: Firstly, there were significant differences in IS sub-factors by visa status. The mean of students’ visa group in interaction engagement, respect for cultural differences, interaction enjoyment and interaction attentiveness were higher than the other two groups. Secondly, there was a significant difference in IS according to the stay duration. The less than a 1-year stay duration group showed a higher mean than 6-10 years stay duration group on the respect for cultural differences and interaction enjoyment. The results showed that according to visa status and stay duration, South-Eastern Asians used different IS to learn the Hangeul. This study suggests careful consideration of the visa status and the stay duration of the learners in the creation, implementation or management of the Hangeul language learning programs in Korea as well as in other countries.
