Abstract
Purpose: The 19th century samurai Ryoma Sakamoto is respected as the ebst leader for modern Japanese . So the case study on Ryoma’s bushido can be an important cluen iunderstanding the Japanese bushido cu-l ture and Japanese. Method: Tried to examine the Japanese bushido culture by analyzing Ryoma bushido reflected in Shiba Ryotaro historical novel Ryoma Goes and related references. Results: First, Ryoma was born in the turbulent era of the late Shogunate in the 1800s, when Japan was confused both internally and externally. As a samurai, Ryoma became a top master of swordsman after his hard Kendo training. Secondl, Ryoma pursued a unique bushido such a sa spirit of respect for life, unlike the othe r samurai’s disregard for human life at that time who committedh te murder and suicide easily under the a fla g to die for. Third, Ryoma studied Rangaku(Dutch learning) and th e idea of liberal democracy of America and finally established a new level of bushido that has added to human dignity and equality. Conclusion: Ryoma’s bushido was the new concept pursuing a spirit of reverence for a life added to human dignity and equality. This Ryoma’s new level of bushido can united a confused world, opened a new modern world in Japan, and suggests meaningful implications for life to modern people in the 21st century.
