Abstract
In today's hair shop work environment, where understanding and meeting customer expectations is complicated, job performance and success or failure of a business may be determined, in part, by the employee’s attitude toward customers during a service encounter and the their level of skill at work. Colleagues with more skill and experience can offer advice relating to career development and serve as mentors, thus providing psychological support for work and help minimize the chance of customer service failures. This study aimed to generate useful suggestions and practical results by analyzing: i) the effect of mentoring on job performance and organizational commitment of hair shop employees, and ii) the moderating effect of self-leadership in the relationship between mentoring, job performance and organizational commitment. A survey of 317 hair shop employees was conducted and SPSS v. 21.0 was used to analyze collected data. Analytic evaluations, including frequency analysis, factor analysis, Cronbach's α coefficient, descriptive statistical analysis, correlation analysis, linear regression analysis and moderated regression analysis were conducted. The study revealed that mentoring-which was divided into 2 sub-factors (ie, career development function and psycho-social function)-had an effect on job performance and organizational commitment. Meanwhile, psycho-social function had a more significant impact on job performance and organizational commitment of hair shop employees compared with career development function; self-readership had a moderating effect on the relationship between: i) mentoring and organizational commitment and ii) mentoring and job performance. Consequently, it is expected that an employees’ competitiveness in the beauty service industry can benefit from: i) improved self-leadership, ii) expanded psycho-social support, and iii) greater access to mentoring.
