Abstract
The objective of our study is to investigate the efficacy of anthocyanin pigments in honeyberry as a natural dye color for hair. We observed that varying the temperature, dyeing time, and pH of the honeyberry extract at the maximum absorption wavelength for anthocyanin (540 nm) induced variations in the color of hair dye. Several mordants were used. We investigated the mordanting effect and colorfastness in association with the mordanting method (pre- mordanting, simultaneous mordanting, and post-mordanting). At the maximum absorption wavelength (540 nm) of anthocyanin pigments and with optimal dyeing conditions of a temperature of 25℃ and a dyeing time of 40 min, the K (absorption coefficient)/S (scattering coefficient) value of the honeyberry extract was 38.044-46.408. For anthocyanin pigments, the K/S (dye uptake) value increased with increasing temperature and dyeing time. When the pH of honeyberry was 3.00, the highest K/S value was 41.540 and the a*value was 2.729, resulting in a deep reddish- purple color. The a*value increased when themordant was acidic. For the alkaline mordant, the b*value increased. According to the results obtained from using the mordant method, FeSO , AlK(SO ) , and CaCO showed the highest K/S values in the pre-mordanting phase. During simultaneous mordanting, the highest K/S values were observed for MgSO , MnSO , CuSO , CH COOH, and Na CO , and that for Co(NO ) in post-mordanting. The range of K/S values 4 42 3 for washing fastness was 39.631–17.660. Our results demonstrate the usefulness of honeyberry as a natural hair dye, due to its capacity to produce a variety of hair colors when used with a mordant.
