Abstract
(Background and Purpose)Placeness is a historical product which accumulates empirical memory of interaction between people and space. Unique placeness of the region is formed based on a variety of daily experiences and the image of place reflects the overall reality of region. Site-specific art symbolizes space based on contextual relation and plays an important role to form regional identity. To regenerate Seuldo Island Park, located in eastern part of Ulsan, as a meaningful place, this study reflects demand and made design. In historic and cultural context, symbolic space of Seuldo Island Park is a spatial design through the medium of site-specific art and it forms regional identity and brings landmark aspect and regenerates the space for symbolic cultural park that harmonizes with surroundings.(Method)The target of design development was the entry of Seuldo Island Park located in Bangeo-dong, Dong-Gu, Ulssan and this study designs symbolic place based on site-specific art considering characteristics of place. The Method of design was, first, reviewing correlation between site-specific art and the place through literature review. Second, drawing symbolic image of region based on locational environment, natural environment and historical fact of Seuldo Island Park. Third, setting the concept of space based on symbolic image after current condition analysis and designing symbol object as site-specific art.(Results)This design development is to regenerate the meaning of place based on site-specific art to enhance Seuldo Island Park. In light of status analysis, Seuldo Island Park has spatial characteristics of shoreline and historical story that goes back to the prehistoric age referring to whale and rocky island with holes. This study designs symbolic object and space based on symbolic image of Seuldo Island Park such as whale carved in stone and rocky island with holes. This study allows regional identity as well as landmark aspects based on historic fact and regional sentiment. The identity of place is formed not only by geographical location or external characteristics but also diverse activities. In historic and cultural context, design presented by this study is a spatial design through the medium of symbolic object of site-specific art, however it is only one factor that represents placeness. Thus, diverse cultural programs should be researched and established as living space of daily life to fully realize placeness.
