The purpose of the study is to research the gender notions of grandmothers who are providing care for their grandchildren. Among qualitative research methods, the ethnographic method, developed by Spradley, was employed for the study. The participants in the research were 13 grandmothers who were caring for or had cared for their grandchildren on a regular basis, and the data were collected through in-depth interviews with them. Four themes were drawn from the results of the data analysis: the notion that it is the duty of females to provide infant care, the notion of gender roles concerning housework and providing care for babies, the gender notion on decisionmaking for parenting support, and the gender notion on responsibility for parenting support. The results of the study on these themes showed that family and relative norms seem to change very slowly despite increasing double income households in Korea.
