Decomposition of Korea’s Export Changes to Vietnam:A Focus on HS 8542, HS 8517 and HS 8529Sungho Nam, Soontae Park, Cheol Lee, & Kwangbae Lee Abstract: This paper aims to analyze the factors increasing significantly Korea’s exports of HS 8542, HS 8517, and HS 8529 to Vietnam using shift-share analysis and constant market share analysis. The shift-share analysis reveals that Korea’s export growth of HS 8542 and HS 8517 exports to Vietnam are affected by national component, sectoral component, and competitiveness component, and Korea has a competitive edge for HS 8542. For HS 8517 and HS 8529, the competitive advantage is the principal component of export growth and Korea has an advantage over Vietnam. Vietnam’s imports of HS 8542 and HS 8529 from Korea are on the increase, but Korea tends to lose competitiveness in the Vietnamese import market. We also show that for HS 8517, Korea is competitive in the Vietnamese import market, but its edge is not great.
