Abstract
This paper analyzes the symbolism and political significance of the “kumbla” in Erna Brodber's Jane and Louisa Will Soon Come Home. The kumbla is a multifaceted metaphor, embodying protection and confinement and reflecting the complexities of Jamaican identity formation and communal history. Brodber employs the kumbla as a central narrative device to critique colonial legacies and explore the tensions between individual growth and collective survival in a postcolonial context. The novel's fragmented structure and integration of African-Caribbean oral traditions, such as ring games and Anancy folktales, highlight the dynamic interplay between past and present, tradition and transformation. The kumbla also features prominently in familial narratives, revealing the lasting impact of colonial hierarchies on personal and communal identities. In its exploration of the kumbla's dual role as both a protective space and a site of potential entrapment, the novel offers a nuanced commentary on the challenges of negotiating heritage and modernity. By situating the kumbla within broader cultural, historical, and sociopolitical frameworks, this paper argues that Brodber redefines the boundaries of postcolonial literature, crafting a narrative that emphasizes both individual and collective agency. Through its innovative use of symbolism, structure, and folklore, Jane and Louisa Will Soon Come Home serves as a powerful testament to the resilience of Jamaican culture and the possibilities of cultural recovery and renewal.
