This research aims to identify whether Korean subjects can articulate the consonants /l/ and /n/ as syllabic in some English words, and how they would pronounce such consonants in comparison to native speakers. To that end, we conducted experiments on Korean and American subjects to measure the duration and formants of the consonants, compare the mean values of the consonants between the two groups in four areas, and analyze the results with statistical tests. As a result, we can confirm the following facts: In a comparison of duration, first, most of the Koreans took much longer than the Americans in their articulation, thereby displaying the general tendency of Koreans to insert vowels after the consonants in word-final positions. Second, the Koreans were influenced by the spellings of English words, so they tried to articulate the vowels in the words which Americans pronounce word-final vowel-consonant clusters as syllabic. A comparison of sound quality employing three formant analyses demonstrated that the Koreans pronounced syllabic consonants significantly differently from the Americans.
